GRAND FALLS, September 18, 2024 - The results of a study on housing in the Northwest Regional Service Commission territory were released earlier today. By 2028, close to 390 housing units will be required to meet the needs of the Grand Falls Regional Municipality’ community.
The study, conducted by Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton, shows that in the Grand Falls Regional Municipality, 50% of dwellings were built between 1960 and 1990, and that just under one dwelling in 10 requires major repairs. The study also shows that average monthly housing costs for renter households are $621, compared with $625 for owner households. In addition, the proportion of households living in affordable units in Grand Falls is 6.1%.
“As everywhere else, our municipality is facing a housing shortage, which is why we've been eagerly awaiting the results of this study. This data will give us a better understanding of how the housing challenge is articulated here in Grand Falls, and how we can address it,” explains Bertrand Beaulieu, Mayor of the Regional Municipality of Grand Falls.
Considering these findings, solutions are suggested to rally the various stakeholders to encourage the construction of housing units, particularly one-bedroom units to meet the needs of the elderly, and three-bedroom units for families.
“Housing is more than a roof over our heads and this study will help us determine how the municipality can support different stakeholders to collectively address this great challenge. The Municipality introduced incentives last May to encourage the construction of rental housing throughout our territory and we want to continue our efforts to collaborate with non-profit organizations and developers to add affordable housing units,” added Mayor Beaulieu.
“To achieve this, the provincial government will also need to be at the table with local governments, not only share responsibility for the financial burden but also ensure access to affordable housing for all.” , Mayor Beaulieu added.
